I want you to stop and think about something. This is a picture of another planet. Where this robot is. Right now.

As we sit here on Earth in this or any moment, we each have in our heads a flurry of worries and questions and ideas. And most of them pertain to our own lives. That’s okay, it’s human nature. We are each the center of our own universe.

I often think about this in crowded places, like while in traffic, as the place I’m going is far more important than the place all of these other people are going. I’m convinced that they feel the same way. And so we sit.

But that means that there are seven billion mental universes walking around on this planet. We are staring into them through little digital windows that we carry in our hands, and certain that this decision is the most important decision. Everything that is happening is happening to us.

Yet for the past eight years, there has been a dusty, six-wheeled rover crawling around the surface of Mars, completely alone. Incidentally, that rover has exceeded its expected mission of 90 days by thirty-two times over. That’s admirable, and I can’t help but personify the little guy. Like a sort of scrappy, diligent explorer, quietly working hard for the benefit of someone else. “No complaints, boss!” Like Johnny 5 meets Wall-E.

And so we get images like this, reminding us that every day we can look beyond our personal universe. What a thought! Look at how much is out there. Think of what else we could see! Let’s go.

As stunts go, planning to jump out of a helicopter, fall 2,400 feet, and land safely without a parachute seems like just about the craziest. But Gary Connery, a 42-year-old father of two just did it in Britain, so crazy or not, we now know it’s possible.

Connery’s a whiz with a wing suit, the contraption skydivers use to allow themselves to glide around, and naturally he’s done stunts for Batman Begins, among other movies. And he’s not that insane: Connery brought a chute with him in case the stunt didn’t work out. Although on second thought that seems… not very well thought through. Wouldn’t it be a little late to pull the chute by the time failure set in?

Looking like a bright star streaking up into a black sky, a rocket took off before dawn today from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida carrying an unmanned capsule filled with food, clothes, and other supplies for astronauts on the international space station.

But this robotic cargo ship doesn’t belong to NASA. Instead, it’s owned by a company called SpaceX, which made history by launching the first ever private spacecraft on a mission to the station.

SpaceX has a $1.6 billion cargo-delivery contract with NASA, which is turning routine flights to the station over to industry so that the veteran space agency can start to focus on more ambitious exploration efforts. (NPR)

Anne the Wife and I got a chance to preview Flint, the new restaurant on the first floor of the Colcord Hotel in OKC. While the historic building still stands as one of the original skyscrapers downtown, it seems that first floor spot is a graveyard of former restaurants. Here’s to hoping this one sticks it out for the long haul.

The first thing you notice is the polished finish and attention to detail. They dumped money into the decor and didn’t skimp on sturdy tables and leather seating. The entire staff was crazy nice and were quick to answer any questions we had.

We started off with a few of the signature cocktails and made our way into the sample sized offerings. Word to the wise for preview meals - sit close to the kitchen window so you get first dibs to whatever is coming out. With heavy hearts and full bellies, we had to turn down 3rds, 4ths, and 5ths. Anne the Wife and I kept asking the chef about the different sauces and he didn’t hesitate to share his secrets.

I hogged the beer cocktail of Vodka, Stella, lemon juice (and other stuff) and stuffed myself with the sample sized chicken strips in Thai peanut sauce. Anne wrestled away each scallop dish and pork taco that came our way. The jalapeno hush puppies and Bloody Mary shrimp cocktails were crazy good and we were close to upset they didn’t bring us more of the watermelon (but fish-less) ceviche.

For dessert, they kept pumping us full of mini doughnuts and house made ‘smores. I think I lied to the waitstaff about how many I’d had and Anne the Wife had no shame in trying each of the three different sauces accompanying the mini doughnuts. Do yourself a favor and try the one with the bacon fudge sauce.

Flint is going to be a nice upscale dining option for downtown. The preview meal was on the house so I can’t speak to the pricing but I imagine it’d be something Anne the Wife and I would need to plan ahead and save for a nice date night. I’m not sure about parking either. There’s nearby parking garages and I’m sure they’ll have a valet option, but you can usually park for free in the parking meter’d areas close by seeing as how most of the area is free after 6-ish. Thanks again for the invite and we look forward to the full open soon.
